Lillian was a student in my first tutorial group in pathology in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I got to know her well and remember her as enthusiastic and bright, although our paths never crossed again since she was a student.Recently I took on duties at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh and had considered getting in touch, but it seems she had retired early by then. I was deeply sorry to read of her death in the BMJ.

  • Memories

Lillian and I were students together but our paths separated after graduation. She was a bright star. I will remember Lillian as a clever, vivacious, caring girl. I know she loved cooking and baking. I still use that cook book she gave me.

I am sad and shocked to learn that she has died at such a young age. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

I was shocked and sad to hear of Lillians untimely death. We were great friends in our early years at Glasgow University Medical Medical School. We seemed to loose touch as our careers took different paths. I have happy memories and have thought of her often in these past few years always meaning to get in touch, alas to late. A lovely person I am so sad and my thoughts are with her brothers and their families.

  • Eddies

    The most iridescent butterflies,

and some that soar the highest,

    often have their vibrant lives

    cut cruelly short.

    Too soon for winter's chill,

but by the sudden unseen swooping of a predator

    or slashing of a net.

    Yet,

    the eddies from their wingbeat

have stirred curlings of the aether.

    Swirling, as a shimmering heat

    of memory, thought,

    deed, word; that ripples still

and then continues; ever rolling, echoing, living,

in heart, mind, life, of those they met.

Thank you all for the kind words and support you have offered us in this difficult time, whether in letters and cards, in speech or in this forum.

    Lillian was a devoted daughter, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a sister-in-law, a colleague, a doctor, a patient, a friend.

She was born into a working class family so dominated by books and by reading that one of earliest memories was of being taken, by our grandfather, to join the local library. Dad was working nightshift or he would have taken her himself while Mum was preparing the dinner for us all.

As a child, besides excelling at school and at Highland Dancing, Lillian developed a great love of cooking and baking which would later become one of the hallmarks of any celebration she hosted.

She also developed her passion for caring for others which drew her to study medicine, a domain in which she was, above all, devoted to her patients. In her working life, she not only treated cancer patients but also worked tirelessly for various cancer charities.

When she unexpectedly died, she had just taken early retirement and had great plans about what she would do. She planned to go to Chicago to see her friends Jackie and Colin and to Ottawa to see Aunt Doreen; and she even planned to come to Northampton to see me and my family.

    May she rest in peace.

    Dear David and Norman,

Words cannot express the sadness I felt when hearing the terrible news about Lillian. Though it has been quite a few years since I have seen Lillian, the memories of such a lovely wonderful delightful lady are still as fresh as if it had just been last week and will stay with me always.

I hope that you and your families can take some comfort from your own many happy memories.

My thoughts are with you all at this sad time.

  • In memorium

I knew Lillian almost 30 years ago, at the threshold of her career but the memories are clear - vivacious, clever, caring and supportive of those in difficulty. Dying far too young and suddenly must be all the harder for her family, friends and colleagues to bear.

May God grant her eternal rest.

  • from the Community of Notre Dame High School Glasgow

It is with great sadness that the school heard of the death of Lillian. Our school community retains many links with former pupils and is always delighted to hear of their achievements and the wonderful work which many of our former students go on to undertake. Clearly Lillian was just such a 'Notre Dame Girl' - a positive and empowered woman who worked for the good of others.

Prayers and Holy Mass will be offered for Lillian in school during Holy Week.

    with deepest sympathy.
